The carboxylation reactions occurring in irradiated aqueous solutions of aliphatic amino acids were investigated for aminobutyric acid, norvaline, valine, norleucine, leucine, and isoleucine. The products of the fixation of C/sup 14/O/ sub 2/ in these amino acids were identified. The effects of the radiation dose, the concentration and the ratio of amino acid to C/sup 14/O/sub 2/ on the yields of glutamic acid from alpha aminobutyric acid as well as the optimum conditions for this reaction were determined. An exchange reaction between the carboxyl group of the amino acid and C/sup 14/O/sub 2/ was observed. A similar study was made for the aliphatic monocarboxylic acids from C-2 to C-8, and the yields of the dicarboxylic acids formed were compared. An increased fixation of CO/sub 2/ was observed with growing chain length. The optimum conditions for the carboxylation of valeric acid were investigated. (auth)
