THE VALIDITY OF METHUSELAH I IN REACTIVITY PREDICTIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4668089

The METHUSELAH I lattice program was used to predict values of K/sub eff/ corresponding to the measured bucklings of a range of lattices moderated by light and heavy water. For 18 light water lattices the mean values of K/sub eff/ and the mean square deviation is 1.000 plus or minus 0.007; while for 45 cluster fuelled D/sub 2/O moderated lattices the corresponding figures are 0.994 plus or minus 0.006. It is concluded that METHUSELAH is suitable for use in survey calculations on both light and heavy water systems. However, further analysis and intercomparison with experimental reaction rates and more detailed theoretical calculation is required, both to improve the accuracy and to remove the possibility of spurious cancellation of errors.
