IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4667736
The design of a Pu-fueled reactor, in which a prolonged burn up of the fuel may be obtained without fuel reprocessing, is patented. The fuel, a cermet of plutonium oxide and stainless-steel particles, may be in sheet form clad in stainless steel. The fuel sheets are arranged in a lattice pattern in a neutron- moderating material, with one face in close proximity with the moderator and the other face fluid-cooled. Alternative designs include a multiplicity of tubular clad fuel elements providing a liner for coolant passages through a graphite moderator, and blocks of moderator material sheathed in clad fuel and spaced apart for coolant passages. The core design minimizes the possibility of a serious release of fission products due to failure of the cooling and control systems. (M.P.O.)
