A STUDY OF NUCLEAR LEVELS EXCITED BY DEUTERON STRIPPING REACTIONS WITH Zr$sup 90$, Zr$sup 91$ AND Sr$sup 88$ TARGET NUCLEI

The 11.1 Mev deuteron beam of the Indiana University cyclotron was used to excite nuclear states in the three shell model isotopes Sr/sup 89/, Zr/sup 91/ , and Zr/sup 92/ by means of deuteron stripping reactions. Excitation energies and proton angalar distributions of low-lying states were measured using a 20 inch radius double-focussing magnetic spectrometer. The orbital angular momentum transfers, the final state spins, and cross section reduced widths were determined by comparison of the measured angular distributions of the excited states with Butler stripping theory. Assignments of the orbital angular momentum transfers in the strontium reaction were also obtained by comparison with distorted wave Born approximation calculations. A shell model calculation of the energy level spectrum of Zr/sup 92/ gives fair agreement with experimental results. The zero-order energy levels used in the calculation were taken from the measured Zr/sup 91/ excitation energies. (TCO)
