NEW HYDRAULIC CONTROL ROD ACTUATOR FOR LARGE NUCLEAR REACTORS

A hydraulically operated control rod actuator was developed for use with large water-cooled reactors. It is capable of actuating control rods weighing up to 2300 pounds. Pressurized primary reactor water is used as the hydraulic fluid, and the design provides smooth, accurate positioning of the control rod with zero drift and a rapid scram response. The transmission of low-level command signals and rod position signals is accomplished by the use of magnetic field coupling through the pressure wall. (M.C.G.)
