HYDRAULIC CONTROL ROD DRIVE (Engineering Materials)
Six photographs and 383 drawings are included. The hydraulically operated control and actuator is used in pressurized-water and boiling-water nuclear reactors. Primary reactor water is used to operate the mechanism, and this section is completely sealed within the pressure vessel for zero leakage. Signals to the control sleeves and the feedback signals of control rod position are transmitted through the pressure vessel wall by means of a magnetic-field coupling, which eliminates use of shaft sleeves. The actuator features a hydraulic feedback within the power unit that equalizes load and hydraulic forces. A change in the hydraulic force causes power piston motion that through the feedback coupling, actuates the servo piston. The position of the control rod within the pressure vessel is transmitted by means of a digital readout system. (F.S.)
