The heat transfer characteristics of a stainless steel tube bundle having a staggered spacing of s/d = 1.2 were determined at temperatures of 210 to 310 deg C at sodium flow velocities of 0.16 to 2.02 m/sec. The oxygen content in the sodium was 0.017 wt%. The Prandti number varied from 0.0057 to 0.0072, and the Reynolds and Peclet numbers were varied from 3.8 to 57 x 10/sup 3/, and from 30 to 345 respectively. A plot of the Nusselt number versus the Peclet number showed that the experimental values lie below the theoretical curve. The two curves approached each other at Reynolds numbers of about 50 x 10/sup 3/. At Reynolds numbers >10/sup 4/, the plot of Nu versus Pe for liquid sodium was in good agreement with the data of Friedland on liquid mercury. The data can be expressed by the following equation: Nu = 6 + 0.006 Pe, where Nu = alpha d/sub hyd/ lambda /, and Pe = w d/sub hyd/a/. This formula can be recommended for calculating the heat flow for longitudinal flow of a liquid metal in a tube bundle with s/d = 1.2 to 1.75 with a staggered arrangement of tubes at 30 < Pe < 4000, and Re> 10/sup 4/.
