Modified Bayard-Alpert Gauge with X-Ray Suppression

A modified Bayard-Alpert inverted ionization gage was developed in which the effective x-ray limit is reduced by one or two orders of magnitude. In this modified gage, a second collector is added which is biased at typically 60 v below that of the first collector, and the collector currents are subtracted. The difference current corresponds to that of a gage with a sensitivity one-third of that of a standard gage, but with a greatly reduced x-ray current since the component x-ray currents nearly cancel. The critical parts of the modified gage are discussed. The gage should be useful in reading pressures in the 10-12 Torr region. (D.L.C.)
