DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF SPECIAL ASSEMBLY 12-L. TWO DESIGNS FOR UTILIZING BORON AS BURNABLE POISON

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4662763

Two reactor fuel rod designs using boron burnable poison have been incorporated into a fuel bundle for irradiation testing in the VBWR to provide irradiation experience for these two designs, under actual operation in a boiling water power reactor. The designs utilize borated stainless steel cladding and a boron compound mixed in compacted powder UO/sub 2/. The test assembly was fabricated for the AEC Fuel Cycle Program, and is designated as Special Assembly 12-L. Irradiation testing in the VBWR started in February, 1963. The bundle contains 16 fuel rods in a 4 x 4 array, and is designed to be operated at a peak heat flux of 400,000 Btu/ft/sup 2/-hr. The rods have a nominal outside diameter of 0.485 inch; the cladding is 0.011-inch-thick Type 304 stainless steel tubing. A discussion is presented of the design and fabrication characteristics of the fuel rods in the bundle. (auth)
