HIGH POWER DENSITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT. Sixth Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4772204

The 24 high power density fuel bundles in VBWR continued to accumulate exposure. Average burnup is 1970 MWD/T for all elements. Two instrumented assemblies functioned in the reactor to an average exposure level of 1490 MWD/T. Operational testing of the instrumented assemblies was planned and conducted. Two-pass cold swaging was used to fabricate ten UO/sub 2/ fuel rods clad with stainless steel. Work on vibratory compaction of fuel rods by electromagnetic techniques was continued. Power cycling of swaged powder specimens was initiated. Design of the Big Rock developmental fuel assembly was completed. An economic study was performed to delineate how various parameters may affect fuel cycle cost. The heat transfer test components were completed and assembly of the ninerod test section was started. Use of burnable poison in a limited number of fuel rods in a reactor core was studied. The effects of control rod pattern on power distribution and on irradiation were investigated. Specifications were written and issued for the data logging computer system. (M.C.G.)
