FLUORIDATED WATER AND THE SKELETAL UPTAKE OF Sr$sup 85$ AND Ca$sup 45$ BY YOUNG RATS

Young growing rats were given various levels (1 to 100 ppm) of fluoride in drinking water to which Sr/sup 85/ and Ca/sup 45/ had been added for test periods of from 10 to 21 days. At the end of this period samples of bone were assayed to estimate the effect of fluoride on the retention of both radionuclides. Addition of fluoride to the water at levels of 1 ppm did not significantly affect the degree of bone mineralization, uptake of Sr/sup 85/ and Ca/sup 45/, or discrimination between the isotopes. At 10 ppm the results on Sr/sup 85/ uptake were equivocal, there being an increase in one study and a decrease in another. A positive effect of 100 ppm of fluoride upon the preferential uptake of Sr/sup 85/ was noted in 2 experiments using 2 different ages of rats. The increase, however, was quite small, being only 30% above that of the control animals, even though the total fluoride intake was more than 10 times greater. The age of the rats was unimportant since rats of 4, 7, and 9 weeks of age at the start of the experiments all showed essentially the same pattern. Pretreatment experiments showed that animals receiving fluoridated water 21 days previous to exposure to Sr/sup 85/ would not take up more Sr/sup 85/ than animals that had not received fluoridated water. Addition of fluoridated water and Sr/sup 85/ simultaneously to the diet did not lead to a greater deposition of Sr than with other groups either. It was concluded that the levels of fluoride customarily added to drinking water will not lead to an increase in the Sr/sup 90/ concentration in the bones of growing children. (TCO)
