CURRENT INDUCED SWITCHING OF SUPERCONDUCTIVE THIN FILMS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4661829
Currents required to cause superconducting to normal transitions of thin films were measured as a function of temperature for various widths and thicknesses. Normal to superconducting transition times for the same films were also measured as a function of the magnitude of drive current. In spite of the lack of a satisfactory theoretical model for the initiation of the transition, the bulk of the results can be understood in terms of temperature changes in the film, as governed by factors limiting the flow of heat (generated subsequent to the initiai transition) into the substrate and liquid helium bath.
