SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF RUTHENIUM AS THE THIOCYANATE COMPLEX

The color forming processes of Ru with thiocyanate from violet-blue species were investigated and the experimental conditions for subsequent spectrophotometric determination of ruthenium were established. In the presence of HCl up to 1.0 mole/l, maximum color development with 0.5 mole/l NH/sub 4/NCS was attained on heating for 15 min at 70 deg C. Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range, 1 to 15 mu g Ru per ml. The molar absorptivity of the colored species is approximately 5900 at its maximum absorbance of 585m mu . Rhodium, iridium, palladium, and platinum produced no interference but osmium formed the orange species with thiocyanate under the condition described. (P.C.H.)
