Cathodic Action of the Metal Complexes at the Dropping Mercury Electrode. VI. Uranyl-Para-Methylaminophenol Sulfate Complex

Journal Article · · Journal of the Chinese Chemical Society
The complex formation of uranyl ion with p-methylaminophenoi sulfate (Metol) was studied polarographically over the pH range 1.5 to 4.7. By comparing the polarogram of acidic uranyl perchlorate solution with that of uranyl perchlorate in Metol solution it was found that the half-wave potential of the first wave of U(VI) was shifted to the negative side by the addition of Metol, indicating complex formation by uranyl ion with Metol. The half-wave potential also changed with the change of pH value of the polarographic solution, thus it may be presumed that hydrogen ion or hydroxyl ion is involved in the cathodic reduction. A1 electron, reversible reduction wave was observed in the pH range. At pH higher than 4.7, a reduction wave of complexing agent was noted. The diffusion current is proportional to the concentration of uranyl ion from 2.0 x 10 -4M to 5.1 x 10 -3M. The diffusion current constant was found to be 1.54 plus or minus 0.03, and the diffusion coefficient (7.96 plus or minus 0.2) x 10 6 cm2/sec. Two hydrogen ions, in the pH range of 1.5 to 2.1, and one hydrogen ion, in the pH range of 3.4 to 4.7, were consumed, respectively, by the reduction of 3 uranyl ions. At pH 2.6 to 4.7, U(V) had one ligand less than U(VI).
