SOME SEGREGATION EFFECTS IN SINTERED UO$sub 2$-PuO$sub 2$ PELLETS

An unusual segregation effect was observed in mechanically blended and sintered UO/sub 2/--PuO/sub 2/ pellets, the effect taking the form of multilayered spheres, alternately uranium- and plutonium-rich. The segregation was detected by an autoradiographic technique. Mechanical methods for eliminating the effect were investigated, with promising results. A high degree of homogeneity was observed in sintered mixed oxides formed by a coprecipitation and coreduction technique. (P.C.H.)
