THE LOCALIZATION OF TUMORS WITH LABELED POLYSACCHARIDE ANTIGENS. Final Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4659990
The possibility of the localization of tumors by the use of labeled tumor polysaccharide (TPS) antigens was investigated using tritium as a label. Results are reported from studies of the uptake of TPS-H/sup 3/ by tumor tissue in culture, the metabolism of TPS-H/sup 3/ in normal and tumor-bearing mice, the localization of TPS-H/sup 3/ in neoplastic and nonneoplastic tissues after pre- treatment with various enzymes and with DNA, the use of erythrocytes and of tumor cells as carriers of TPS-H/sup 3/ to the tumor, the effects of age and other variables on the uptake-of TPS-H/sup 3/ and of tritiated water by tumor and normal tissues, and the relative uptake of TPS-H/sup 3/ by various neoplastic and normal tissues in a case of metastatic carcinoma of the ovary. Selective localization to tumor tissue as compared with muscle was noted in all neoplastic tissues but the concentration of TPS-H/sup 3/ was highest in the kidneys and liver. No high extent of selective localization of TPS-H/sup 3/ to neoplastic as compared with non-neoplastic tissues was found. (C.H.)
