CHEMICAL EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR RECOIL. ALKALI BROMATES

Journal Article · · Radiochimica Acta (West Germany)
An attempt was made to explain some of the discrepancies that were observed during studies on the retention of bromine in neutron irradiated bromates. In particular the influence of solvent, irradiation time, and thermal annealing was investigated in potassium bromate, lithium (natural abundance) bromate, and lithium (depleted in Li/sup 6/) bromate. Experiments show that a considerable amount of neutral bromine is formed upon recoil, and that the abnormal behavior of lithium bromate is due to the consequences of Li/sup 6/(n, alpha )T reactions. An explanation is put forward on the basis of an oxygen free intermediate recoil bromine fragment. The isotope effect on bromine recoil was confirmed. (auth)
