MAGNETIC STUDIES OF IRRADIATED HEMATITE CRYSTALS. Annual Technical Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4654210
A natural crystal of hematite was ground into the form of a sphere about 0.16-in. in diameter. Magnetic measurements by the Curie method were made before and after neutron irradiation. Only small changes in the magnetic properties occurred after a fast flux of 8 x 10/sup 18/ nvt. Following a second irradiation of 5 x 10/sup 17/ nvt, several pronounced differences were observed in the magnetic behavior. Results indicated that lattice defects are a possible source of ferromagnetism in hematite. Possibly neutron irradiation produced a source of magnetism different from those existing previously.
