The uranyl-- glycolate complex system was studied at 30 deg C by polarography. The half-wave potential vs pH plots broke at pH 3.8 (when mu = 0), which was equal to the pK value of the glycolic acid. The compositions of the complexes were confirmed to have metal-- ligand ratios of 1: 1 and 1: 2 by conductometric measurement. The electrode reactions were deduced to be UO/sub 2/ G/sub 2/ + H/sup +/ + d/sup -/ = UO/sub 2/ G + HG pH < 4.1 and UO/sub 2/G/sub 2/ + e/sup -/ = UO/sub 2/G + G/sup -/ 4.1 < pH < Above pH 5.1, the uranyl ion was complexed with hydroxyl ion in preference to glycolate ion, and this rendered the reduction irreversible. The diffusion current was proportional to concertration of uranium from 1.0 x 10/sup -4/M to 3.5 x 10/sup -3/M with plus or minus 2% relative standard deviation. (auth)
