GRAPHITE IRRADIATION EXPERIMENTS IN H.F.R. PETTEN. PART I. CAPSULE DESIGN AND SAMPLE MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES. Project DRAGON.

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4653136
The report describes the design and operation of a series of eight graphite irradiation capsules operated in H.F.R. Petten to obtain property change data for H.T.R.'s. Constant temperatures are maintained in the three sections of capsule operating at 600, 900, and 1200 deg C respectively by a combination of {gamma}-heating and electrically operated heaters. Measurement techniques for neutron dose, dimensional change, coefficient of thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, Young's Modulus and the characterisation of pyrocarbons are described. Results of the capsule irradiation are presented in Part II of this repot and the design and results of graphite creep experiments are given in a separate report, D.P. Report 562. (auth)
