Exxon Co. U.S.A. recently drilled and completed a shallow, long-reach Gulf of Mexico (GOM) well with a measured/true-vertical depth ratio (MD/TVD) of 2.95. Critical aspects of the planning phase included designing casing and drillstrings. Drag-modeling revealed that, as an alternative to buoyancy assist, designing the production casing as an inverted tapered casing string would enable running it to bottom successfully. By incorporating this design, trip-profile modeling revealed a high probability for casing the production hole with a single string of casing, thereby eliminating the need for a liner.
