Exxon`s West Delta 73 F-37 well was recently drilled to a long-throw (closure or reach), shallow-gas objective at a total depth (TD) of 10,226 ft measured depth (MD) and 3,083 ft true vertical depth (TVD). The 3.3 to 1 MD/TVD ratio exceeded that of previous Gulf of Mexico (GOM) wells when Well F-37 reached TD in June 1993. The 8,492-ft throw also surpassed the reach of previous GOM wells with similar TVDs. This 85{degree} extended-reach well used negative-weight technologies like buoyancy-assist and inverted drillstrings. This article discusses techniques that assured operational success. The well was drilled and completed in 42 days, 10% under budget and free of significant non-productive time.
