Northeast Frigg field installations: Environmental impact when removed
The removal of the field control station (FCS) from the Northeast Frigg (NF) field was performed successfully in 1996. The preparation started in 1990 and has been a long process. The final abandonment and removal plan was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in 1995. Although the NF field consists of very specific installations, this first Norwegian continental shelf case attracted considerable interest in terms of the decision process, contractual, and safety/environmental aspects. This was the first case for the Norwegian authorities and it can be used as an example for the decision process when removal of other platforms is being prepared. The NF gas field was a small satellite of the Frigg field, 11 miles away, and was operated by Elf Petroleum Norge A/S. The field was shut in 8 May 1993 after producing more than 384 Bcf of gas and was the first field to be decommissioned in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The wells were abandoned during the summer of 1994, the FCS was removed in the summer of 1996, and the subsea template will be removed in the summer of 1997. The paper discusses the decision process, the operator`s approach to meeting the approved abandonment plan, strategy to meet environmental issues, operations, experiences, and recommendations.
