O.E.C.D. DRAGON HIGH TEMPERATURE REACTOR PROJECT FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT 1962- 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4649519
Progress on the Dragon Project is reported. Design work and civil construction were almost completed. Various core configurations were caiculated in respect to reactivity, control, power, and temperature distributions. Measurements on the high-temperature circular and annular channels were cortinued. The work on rubbing components such as bearings and gears was continued. The final control rod mechanism is under test. Carbon transfer experiments showed that nickel has a very active catalytic effect on graphite corrosion and that vanadium, above a minimum content, gives rise to pitting corrosion. Tests indicated that graphite corrosion initiates dust formation. Considerable experience in assembly of fuel elements was gained in assembling the dummy charge. Development work on coated-particle fuel was continued. A graphite free from carbon black with the required pore size characteristics was developed. The primary heat exchanger pressure casings were welded into position in the reactor and the heat transfer tube bundles are nearing completion. Acceptance testing of the primary gas circulators was continued. The fuel handling machine has reached an advanced stage of assembly. (M.C.G.)
