NOTES ON COHERENT EFFECTS IN THE COSMOTRON

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4649198
Experiments on the time dependence of intensity dependent losses indicated that the longitudinal instability caused a loss of particles from the Cosmotron after injection. Subsequent increases of the effective aperture of the device and of the intensity eliminated these intensity dependent losses during injection. Also, spreading the beam energy by use of appropriate r-f accelerating cavities resulted in reduction of the random growth that characterized the longitudinal instability, but an intensity independent bunching occurred. The stabilization was also much less effective than was theoretically expected. (D.C.W.)
