A SUMMARY OF THE COSMOTRON EXPERIMENTS ON THE COHERENT VERTICAL INSTABILITY

Coherent vertical betatron oscillations leading to beam losses were identified in the Cosmotron. The intensity dependence of the oscillation growth rate and the dependence of the oscillation frequency on intensity and radius were investigated. Evidence for a radial instability was also obtained. Recently, the vertical instability was successfully damped by electronic circuits. (D.C.W.)
