DISCHARGE FIGURES IN DIELECTRICS BY ELECTRON IRRADIATION

Journal Article · · Ann. Rept. Radiation Center Osaka Prefect.
OSTI ID:4648416

A method for the breakdown of dielectrics under electron beam irradiation and subsequent formation of tree-like discharge figures, called Lichtenberg Figures, is given. A dielectric sample is pricked on the surface with a needle and then irradiated until the first discharge occurs. The stem of the pattern starts from the prick. The size and figure of the discharge pattern depend on the integrated dose to the first discharge. The formation characteristics of the discharge pattern of methyl methacrylate polymer were studied. It was concluded that the magnitude and figure of Lichtenberg patterns in a dielectric can be controlled by the depth of prick on it. (P.C.H.)
