IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTOR REFUELLING ARRANGEMENTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4648018
A method of removing a fuel element from the cure of a power reactor is patented. A carrier is passed through the wall of the reactor vessel to a position immediately adjacent to the fuel element's exit from the core. The element is withdrawn from the core, totally immersed in liquid contained by the carrier, and moved by the carrier to a disposal point. The same grab of a charging machine may be utilized for removing the fuel element and transporting the carrier. For vertically oriented fuel elements immersed in a pool of liquid coolant, an open-topped carrier may be passed through a top wall of the reactor vessel and filled with coolant by submersion, while the fuel element is transferred to the carrier beneath the surface of the pool.
