The use of a membrane filter to retain activity, with retention of up to 3% with relatively high concentrations of uranyl acetate is described. Alpha plus beta activity retained was found to be lower in water samples containing 1805 ppm added solids, probably due to larger selfadsorption factor. Experiments were also made with flocculating agents, with acetic acid or calcium chloride, followed by heating to boiling point, which gave the fastest and most complete results. Factors that affect ion exchange, and that must be considered in selecting a resin for concentrating nuclides by the ion exchange method, are ionic radius, activity of ion, valence state, hydration of resin and ion, diffusion rate through resin, flow rate through column, and temperature. Resin cross linkage, mesh size, capacity for exchange, and stability are also important. (Public Health Eng. Abstr., vol. 43: Sept.
