TITANIUM ALLOYS IN 600 F AMMONIATED WATER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4647100

Three high-strength titanium alloys, (Ti--6Al--4V), (Ti--6Al--6V--2Sn), and (Ti--13V--11Cr--3Al), were corrosion tested in 800 deg F ammoniated water at pH 10. There was no significant change in mechanical properties before and after exposure in test solution for two alloys, (Ti -- 6Al --4V) and (Ti-- 6Al --2Sn). The high vanadiumchromium alloy (Ti -- 13V -- 11Cr-- 3Al) appeared to undergo some reduction in ducttlity, possibly due to aging. Hydrogen embrittlement due to water corrosion was not detected in any of the three alloys tested. The high vanadiumchromium alloy appeared to have more affinity for hydrogen, particularly during the aerated, ammoniated water exposure period. The combined stress corrosion-crevice corrosion tests with tri-angular bends showed no visible corrosion effects for these three titanium alloys coupled to dissimilar metal tri- angular bends of 17-4 PH stainless steel, Type 304 stainless steel, Type 410 stainless steel, and Inconel Alloy 600. There was no sub-surface corrosion attack when these alloys were immersed in AFAC or EDTA decontamination solution. (auth)
