Reactor fuel rods with double-walled sleeves and the reactor using the fuel rods and sleeves are patented. The elongated sleeve surrounds a fuel rod, providing a central passage for the flow of coolant over the fuel rod and an annuiar passage also for coolant flow. The annular passage is closed at the fluid outlet end except for apertures connecting the annular passage to the central passage. Apertures may also be provided about midway between the ends of the sleeve. The walls of the sleeve may be cylindrical, have transverse corrugations, or be partially conically divergent and partially conically convergent. The annular coolant passage prevents heat transfer to the moderator surrounding the fuel channels. (M.P.G.)
