Investigation was made in 26 women with lumbar spondylitis who received x-ray treatment for their condition, and in which attempts were made to prevent injury to the ovaries thus affording protection against permanent amenorrhea, a frequent complication of lumbar irradiation of women. In the application of the x-rays, perpendicular incidence is abandoned, and two oblique fields of 10 x 15 cm are used, alternated at angles of 35-40 deg to the left and right of the spinal column. The 26 patients varied in age between 3050 yr. Total incident x- ray dose was 200-500 r/hour per field, given in partial doses of 100 r twice a week at 200 kv and 0.5 Cu + 1.0 Al filtration and 50 cm distance. At followup, all women examined after x-ray treatment had normal menstrual periods. This method is therefore successful in protecting women against the development of amenorrhea from ovarian radiation injury. (BBB)
