A study was made to determine the validity of Brownell's theoretical results for the response of various collimators used in radioisotope scanning techniques. The isoresponse curves for three different collimators (single straight hole, single tapered hole, honeycomb) were measured in air and in water and compared with the theoretical ones. The inair isoresponse curves compared favorably with those established by Brownell. A scattering medium such as water has a marked effect upon the curves, in that the point of max response, and correspondingly all others, are moved back towards the collimator face. The width of resolution at the point of max sensitivity is unaffected by a scattering medium. It was possible to determine the axial response for a particular collimator for I/sup 131/ by assuming that its response in air is close to its theoretical response. This axial response may then be modified by the attenuating factor for I/sup 131/ 384-kev gamma rays, to give the axial response to be expected when the source is within a scattering medium. This axial response appears to be largely independent of the distance between the collimator and scattering medium, providing this distance is not too large. Thus, the response of the collimators to a source in a scattering medium may be approximated by the application of an attenuation correction to the theoretical or in-air response. It was concluded that a fair degree of accuracy may be assumed in designing a collimator, if Brownell's theoretical response is assumed and then corrected for attenuation in order to obtain the response in human tissue.
