The composition of the thymus of mice during the first 24 hours after total body irradiation with 800 R was investigated. During the first 2 hours after the radiation insult, a weight decrease of about 13% was found. A further continuous weight decrease appeared after the fourth hour. Quantitative evaluation of the histologic preparation showed that the number of normal lymphocytes decreased rapidly immediately after the insult. Part of these cells emigrate from the organs duriag the first two hours. This can be responsible for the first weight loss. Furthermore, the cell damage starts without latency after irradiation. Eight hours after irradiation, the highest values for nucleus pycnosis can be found. At this time all lymphocytes are damaged or dead. After the 12th hour normal lymphocytes begin to appear in increasing numbers in the thymus. (auth)
