REPORT ON THE HISTOLOGY AND CYTOLOGY OF IRRADIATED THYMUS. PART II (in German)

Journal Article · · Strahlentherapie (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4142919
Thymus cells from whole-body-irradiated mice (800 r) were observed by electron microscope and the radiation effects upon the substructure of the lymphocytes and of the reticular cells were compared with each other. Immediately after the radiation insult, the space between both nuclear membranes starts to form vacuoles which finally fill out the whole space near the nucleus. The organelles of the cytoplasm, the mitochondrias and especially the endoplasmatic reticulum are almost unchanged to the time of the nuclear pycnosis. The radiation effect is only transient on the nuclear membrane of the reticular cells but is pronounced on the structures of the cytoplasm. The mitochondria as well as the well-developed endoplasmatic reticulum can control the damage of the cell nucleus. (auth)
