Studies indicating a causal relation between irradiation of the pregnant female and malformation of the offspring, both in animals and in humans, are reviewed, and the case of a girl, hospitalized at the age of three for psychomotor retardation, is described. Previous history of the case revealed that the mother received a radiologic examination of the abdomen for gastrointestinal infection during the second month of pregnancy. The apparently normal female infant showed convulsions at 3 months, and at 15 months was operated on for congenital unilateral cataract. Pediatric examination after hospitalization revealed: microcephalia and right facial paresis; malformation of the central nervous system with deafmuteness and mentai retardation; slight malformation of the heart, producing a murmur; ocular malformation: microphthalmia, congenital cataract in the right eye and bilateral retinal dystrophy. Correlation of this study with experimental research in this field led to the following conclusions: heavy direct irradiation of the embryo in the first months of pregnancy frequently causes embryopathy, characterized by marked congenital malformations of the central nervous system, eyes, bones, and genitourinary system; irradiation is most dangerous in the first 3 months of human gestation, and especially from the third to the ninth or tenth week, when the central nervous system and eyes are particularly sensitive; to cause embryopathy, the x-ray dose must exceed 50 r; any irradiation during the first 3 months of pregnancy be avoided, and irradiation of the pelvis of women of childbearing age be limited to the first 2 weeks after menstruation.
