A NEW MASS SPECTROMETER FOR PRECISION MEASUREMENT OF THE $sup 235$U/$sup 238$U ISOTOPIC RATIO OF UF$sub 6$

Construction and performance data of a mass spectrometer for UF/sub 6/ measurements are given. The mass spectrometer is equipped with a triple inlet system, and the UF/sub 6/ passes through the ion source as a narrow molecular beam without striking walls. The molecular beam has an aperture angle of only a few degrees. Due to a special construction of the molecular beam system, the consumption of sample material is small. The practical operating period of the ion source is not limited by contamination but by the lifetime of the cathode only, which is more than 1000 hr. The memory factor is smaller than 1.003. After pumping the sample out of the inlet system, the ion current falls to below 0.03% within 20 sec. The measuring accuracy for the isotopic ratio of normal samples is plus or minus 0.0%. (auth)
