A METHOD FOR THE DECOMPOSITION OF AMMONIUM NITRATE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4643744
A method is suggested for the decomposition of ammonium nitrate contained in effluent liquors. This involves the electrochemical reduction of the nitrate to ammonium nitrite with subsequent decomposition, by heating, to nitrogen and water. The feasibility of the method was studied by means of a number of electrochemical experiments designed to test various electrode systems. A series of chemical experiments, in which the rate constant for the decomposition of ammonium nitrite was determined, were also carried out.Various theoretical aspects of the system are discussed.
