EXCITATION FUNCTIONS FOR NUCLEAR REACTIONS INDUCED BY THE BOMBARDMENT OF Bi$sup 209$ WITH FAST PROTONS (in Russian)
Cross sections were measured for various products resulting from the bombardment of Bi/sup 209/ with protons ranging from 0.135 to 10 Bev in energy. Targets consisting of either bismuth oxide or metallic bismuth were irradiated with protons accelerated in the synchrocyclotron and in the synchrophasotron of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Forty-eight bombardments were carried out; these ranged in duration from 15 min to 4 hr. Chemical separations were performed, and the various fractions were counted using an alpha ionization chamber, a NaI gamma spectrometer, and a 4 pi gamma and K x-ray counter. Absolute cross sections were measured by using the Al/sup 27/(p,3pn)Na/sup 24/ reaction as the monitor. The investigated products ranged from Po/sup 210/ to Cu/ sup 67/. In all, forty-three radioactive products were studied. It is planned to use these data for the determination of the parameters that enter into the interpolation formulas of Turkevich and Rudstam. The data may also serve to illuminate the mechanisms involved in the production of different nuclides by the interaction of fast protons with heavy nuclei. (TTT)
