A reactor control rod composed of a plurality of sections of different concentrations of burnable poison is patented. The sections may be nested shells within an outer can, each section having a predetermined concentration of a burnable neutron-absorbirg poison such as compounds of Gd, Cd, or Sm. The sections are arranged so that the poison compensates for the loss of excess reactivity in the reactor core and also for variations in neutron flux at different levels in the reactor core. The sections of shells may be the entire length of the control rod, or they may be only a few inches in length, so that the rod would consist of a plurality of stacked sections. (M.P.G.)
