INFRARED SPECTRA OF HIGHLY ASSOCIATED LIQUIDS AND THE QUESTION OF COMPLEX IONS IN FUSED SALTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4636693
Infrared absorption spectra were derived from infrared reflectivity data by the method of Robinson and Price for the systems LiNO/sub 3/ -NaNO/sub 3/, KNO/ sub 3/ --AgNO/sub 3/, LiNO/sub 3/ -- L iOH, LiNO/sub 3/ -H/sub 2/O, LiClO/sub 3/ - - H/sub 2/O, LiOH -NaOH, ZnCl/sub 2/-- LiC l, ZnCl/sub 2/-KCl, CuCl/sub 2/-- LiCl, CuCl/sub 2/--KCl, and CuCl -- LiCl. The question of the determination of the existence and nature of complex ions and ion pairs in these strongly associated systems is critically discussed and operational criteria are suggested. In only one system studied (CuCl/sub 2/-KCl) was the presence of a complex ion indicated by the spectroscopic data. (auth)
