The reate of exhange with oxygen enriched to 3% O/sup 18/ was determined at a gas pressure of 150 mm Hg for polycrystalline hexagonal GeO/sub 2/. Results indicated that the exchange followed kinetics expected for a diffusion-controlled process. In liquid GeO/sub 2/ the oxygen exchange rate was found to be proportional to the square root of the time. The vaporization rates are such that a major mechanism of O/sup 18/ depletion from the gas phase at temperatures above 1200 deg C is exchange at the surface followed by evaporation. The oxygen diffusion coefficients were calculated. (C.E.S.)
