SELF-DIFFUSION OF OXYGEN IN SINGLE-CRYSTAL BERYLLIUM OXIDE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4630592
Self-diffusion of oxygen in beryllium oxide was studied by means of the isotope exchange between gaseous oxygen enriched with O/sup 18/ and crushed single crystals of beryllia. The progress of the diffusion was followed by measuring the decrease in O/sup 18/ concentration in a well stirred gas of constant volume. Measurements were carried out in the range from 1300 to 1700 deg C. Art activation energy for diffusion of approximately 68 kcal/mole was found. Comparrison of the diffusion coefftcients determined with those from a previous investigation on polycrystalline beryllium oxide indicates a difference of approximately 1 1/2 orders of magnitude. Several explanations for the difference are considered. (auth)
