A containment vessel of welded construction designed to withstand fluid pressure differences is patented. To avoid the necessity of stress-relieving after welding, a domeshaped cover instead of a flat plate is used to close the iarge access port. The thickness of the cover and the thickness of the flange on the containment vessel in the regions where they are welded together are less than the thickness at which stress relieving would be required. The inner surfaces of the flange and cover form a hemisphere or part of an ellipsoid. (M.P.G.)
