ON THE QUESTION OF THE RELEASE OF CHROMOSOME ABERRATIONS BY FREE RADICALS OF WATER IN VICIA FABA SOLUTION (in German)
Vicia faba seeds and main roots were exposed to HO and HO/sub 2/ radicals produced with Fenton's reagent (Fe SO/sub 4/ + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/). The same radicals are induced in the course of radiodecomposition of water with ionizing radiation and the purpose of the experiments was to find out whether these radicals (and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/) are able to induce chromosome aberrations when chemically produced. In contrast to experiments with barley and Allium chromosome aberrations were not induced within a wide array of experimental conditions. Both the radicals and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ proved ineffective in Vicia faba. The results are discussed in connection with their significance for indirect radiation effects via water decomposition products. (auth)
