A technique is described by which highly perfect single crystals of CaF/ sub 2/, SrF/sub 2/, BaF/sub 2/, CdF/sub 2/, LaF/sub 2/, CeF/sub 2/, PrF/sub 2/, TbF/sub 2/, MgF/sub 2/, and ZnF/sub 2/ were prepared in a hydrogen fluoride atmosphere. Rare-earth-doped CaF/sub 2/, and SrF/sub 2/, LaF/sub 2/, cobalt- doped ZnF/sub 2/ and MgF/sub 2/, and nickel-doped MgF/sub 2/ were successfully used as optical masers. These crystals were free of light scattering and revealed no strain pattern when viewed through crossed polarizers. (auth)
