DETERMINATION OF OXIDE SOLUBILITY IN MOLTEN FLUORIDES

The solubility of UO/sub 2/ is determined at 1250 deg C in ternary melts containing UF/sub 4/, BaF/sub 2/, and either CaF/sub 2/, LiF, or SrF/sub 2 The solubility of CeO/sub 2/ is measured at 800 and 850 deg C in a solution of CeF/ sub 3/, BaF/sub 2/, anmd LiF. The amount of La/sub 2/O/sub 3/ th at dissolves at 950 deg C in a binary mixture of LiF and LaF/sub 3/ and a ternary mixture of LiF, LaF/sub 3/, and BaF/sub 2/ is also measured. In each case, the amount of soluble oxide is found to be less than 5 wt%. A procedure is also developed for filtering fused, oxide-saturated fluoride melts in order to obtain a representative sample for chemical analysis. The oxide content of the samples is determined by an inert-gas fusion procedure. (auth)
