Metals and oxides of Zr and Hf were photoactivated by bremsstrahlung produced by betatron and the residual radioactive nuclides were investigated in order to obtain the experimental condition for the determination of Zr in Zr-Hf mixtures. The individual metal or oxide was bombarded for 5 min by bremsstrahlung (maximum energy 24 Mev, maximum intensity approximates 10/sup 2/ rontgens/min/cm/sup 2/). With Zr target, Zr/sup 89m/ produced by Zr/sup 90/( gamma ,n) reaction was sufffcient for the purpose of determining Zr after the relatively short life radionuclides, mainly 125 sec O/sup 15/, had decayed out. The residual radioactivity of photoactivated Hf target was not recognized for the same condition as described above. The total radioactivity of the photoactivated Zr-Hf mixture was, therefore, attributed to 4.4 min Zr/sup 89m/. As the internal standard, copper powder was homogeneously mixed with Zr- Hf mixture and the radioactivity of the residual 9.7 min. Cu/sup 62/, produced by Cu/sup 63/( gamma ,n) reaction, was compared. When various mixtures of ZrO/sub 2/-HfO/sub 2/- Cu were photoactivated by the same condition as described above, the linear relationship was obtained between the ratios of the radioactivity, Zr (cps)/Cu (cps), and the ratios of the weight, W/sub ZrO/sub 2///W/sub Cu/. Hence, the determination of Zr in ZrHf mixture was attained by mixing the known amount of copper powder with finely powdered sample to be analyzed followed by the photoactivation by the described condition and the subsequent analysis of decay curve to obtain the ratio of the radioactivity, Zr/sup 89m//Cu /sup 62/.
