Mossbauer absorption spectra were investigated on compound I which is an addition product of DTOH/sub 2/ and FeCl/sub 2/ (II), on compound II which can be represented by a formula Fe(DTOH) (removal of two hydrogen atoms), and on compound III or Fe(DTOMe)/sup 2/ which is a methyl ether derivative. Co/sup 57/ plated on chromium and fixed by thermodiffusion at 800 deg C in a hydrogen atmosphere was used as a source of 14.4-kev gamma quanta. A scintiliation counter with a NaI(Tl) crystal 1 mm thick was used as a detector. The resonance absorption spectrum was analyzed on a 100channel amplitude analyzer. The Co/sup 57/ source was maintained at room temperature, while the absorber was held at room temperature (300 deg K) and at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (78 deg K). No Zeeman splitting of the ground state or excited state of Fe/sup 57/ was observed. Direct measurements showed that the compounds were diamagnetic. The chemical shift S in mm/sec and quadrupole splitting DELTA in mm sec were determined for these compounds. The values of S were 0.47 at 78 deg K ( DELTA = 0.65) and 0.42 at 300 deg K ( DELTA = 0.68) for compound I, 0.29 at 75 deg K and 0.22 ( DELTA = 2.02) at 300 deg K for compound II, and 0.50 ( DELTA = 0.88) at 78 deg K and 0.45 ( DELTA = 0.88)- for compound III. The quadrupole splitting increased sharply in compound II, while the chemical shift decreased. Compounds I and II gave a similar Mossbauer spectrum. A calculation of the molecular orbitals is required for a complete quantitative explanation of these effects. (TTT)
