SMALL-ANGLE ELASTIC PROTON-PROTON SCATTERING AT 6 AND 10 Gev

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4633344
The relative behavior of the differential elastic p-p scattering cross section has been obtained for the proton energies of 6 and 10 Bev in the range of momentum transfers where the Coulomb scattering is essential (0.003 Bev/sup 2//c/ sup 2/ < t < 0.08 Bev/sup 2//c/sup 2/). 22,000 events of elastic sc attering have been detected. It was found that the value of the differential cross section at small t is larger than that calculated by the optical theorem. TWo possibilities of accounting for this effect are treated: either there exists the real part in the scattering amplitude, or the singlet and the triplet scattering amplitudes are different. This experiment is in better agreement with the assumption that the real part of the scattering amplitude in the first case or the scattering amplitude in the singlet state in the second case have a narrower angular distribution than the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude.
